Conversion between ASCII and EBCDIC

This section describes Code Conversion between ASCII and EBCDIC, first describing Code-set Conversion for Japanese, and then Code-set Conversion for Chinese.

Code-set Conversion for Japanese

HULFT can carry out Code Conversion between ASCII and the eight types of EBCDIC that HULFT can handle.

For details on the eight types of EBCDIC that HULFT can handle, refer to Table 1.8 Types of EBCDIC.

To use a code set other than the eight types of EBCDIC, register conversion tables to convert data that are appropriate for the environment in use (EBCDIC user table).

HULFT provides the EBCDIC Code Set Conversion Template files so that you can easily create an EBCDIC user table from one of them.

When you use an EBCDIC Code Set Conversion Template file to create an EBCDIC user table, you can easily modify codes in the conversion table.

For details of the settings of EBCDIC user tables, refer to the following:

HULFT10 for Windows Administration Manual : EBCDIC user table settings

HULFT10 for Linux/AIX Administration Manual : EBCDIC user table settings

HULFT10 for IBMi Administration Manual : EBCDIC User Table Settings

HULFT10 for zOS Administration Manual : EBCDIC user table settings

Note
  • In Code Conversion between a type of EBCDIC and UTF-8, you cannot use an EBCDIC user table.

For details on combinations of code sets for which you can use EBCDIC user tables, refer to Combinations that allow EBCDIC user tables to be used.

  • When you use an EBCDIC user table, you must register the EBCDIC user table and configure the relevant settings on the appropriate host, as follows:

    Sending-side conversion:

Register the user table and configure the relevant settings on the host on the sending side

    Receiving-side conversion:

Register the user table and configure the relevant settings on the host on the receiving side

  • You can use Japan (Katakana) Extended for IBM in HULFT Ver.7.3 or higher.

When you want to use Japan (Katakana) Extended for IBM in transfer to or from a host that runs HULFT lower than Ver.7.3, carry out Code Conversion on a host that runs HULFT Ver.7.3 or higher.

Code-set Conversion for Chinese

HULFT can carry out Code Conversion between ASCII and Simplified Chinese Extended which is EBCDIC for Chinese.

Figure 1.7 Conversion between ASCII and EBCDIC (for Code-set Conversion for Chinese)

Note
  • In Code-set Conversion for Chinese, you cannot use EBCDIC user tables.

  • You can carry out single byte code conversion for Simplified Chinese Extended only in HULFT Ver.8.1 or higher.

If the host on the sending side or the host on the receiving side runs HULFT lower than Ver.8.1, HULFT cannot carry out single byte code conversion to or from Simplified Chinese Extended.

When you want to use Simplified Chinese Extended in a transfer to or from a host that runs HULFT for zOS, carry out Code Conversion on the host that runs HULFT other than HULFT for zOS.
